COVID 19 - Dojo Update

Zoom classes started for teens and adults

During this time away from being physically on the mat with partners there is an opportunity to continue your training off the mat in the online Zoom sessions. Please check our schedule for information to get connected. This is a great way to practice self awareness in our movements with our weapons and in open hand training. We are focusing on body organization and aiki principles through the traditional solo exercises for both open hand and weapon training. These drills are the foundation of our basic kihon waza and without a deep understanding of how they function in our techniques we are missing their importance to the integrity of our practice.

These exercises can shift the practice from a mechanical one to a deeply integrated state of unity between the body, mind and spirit for both uke and nage. Often when training with a partner, we become more focused on "doing something to throw uke" and we lose our ability to self-correct to develop a calm and unified movement. Using visualization of a partner, either as uke or nage, we are studying some of our habits that may or may not be helpful in a non-stressful atmosphere.

We encourage you to join us for these sessions to help keep the connections between dojo members. We miss seeing each other and having physical face-to-face interactions but this is how we can adapt to our circumstances. Saotome Sensei has taught us how to adapt to changing conditions on the mat so now we can use that experience to train off the mat. This is a different opportunity to bring our inside training to our regular life so we can stay strong in our hearts and minds for the integrity of our dojo community.

Moving towards in person training

Governor Inslee has stressed that the recovery from this pandemic will come in phases. Last weekend the board met and looked at the guidelines from King County and Washington state and discussed ways we can continue to train as a community. Right now Sensei Lee is teaching 3 times a week over Zoom, one class for teens, and the other two classes are working through Two Swords. After June 8th we are hoping for a variance that will open up restrictions to allow us to gather outside. We are starting to look into ways we could host weapons classes in street clothes in the parking lot during our warm summer evenings. At this point there are two things we are sure of:

  1. We will need to start with a limited schedule and adapt as conditions change.
  2. There will be extensive protocols in place to mitigate risk of transmission for our in person training.

Our goal is to stay safe while staying connected. As we move into phase 2 (which is expected near the end of June) we expect to be able to have classes with 5 people in the dojo (with masks and the enhanced sanitation practices we had started just before the stay-home, stay- healthy order) we see this as an opportunity to bring kids back for training. The most important thing for us right now is to hear from you.

It is exciting to be taking our first steps back to the mat together and we thank you for the patience and ideas as we move forward on this path.

Welcome to Aikido Northshore

Aikido Northshore is a family dojo that teaches traditional Aikido and serves Kirkland and the Greater Eastside community. 2020 marks our 25th Anniversary and we are very excited to share this milestone with all our current, former, and future members. Our students range in age from 4-75 years. We believe it does not matter what level of strength you begin with, just that you try to advance a little bit in each class . This philosophy is one of the reasons many people that practice Aikido feel it helps their daily life. Aikido For Children & Teens (Ages 4-15)

The primary focus of the children's program is the development of the self. Body strength and coordination are developed from physical movement. Awareness, concentration, focus and self-esteem are improved. Students develop a sense of center and grounding.

Aikido is unique among martial arts as it teaches children how to avoid fighting. Aikido helps children learn to deal with difficult situations in a non-violent, non-confrontational manner. They are taught not to become fearful or aggressive when encountering conflict, but to deliberately redirect a potentially negative interaction. This process helps children build good social and communication skills.

Aikido teaches body awareness, sensitivity to movement and coordination. Aikido training develops self-confidence and a positive self-image. In many cases there can be academic improvement due to increased ability to focus, cooperate and follow instruction.

Aikido for Adults

Aikido is a complete system for the development of the body, mind and spirit. The physical benefits are increased strength, endurance, conditioning, balance, coordination and stress reduction.

Aikido students learn to be grounded and centered in their daily lives. Aikido training improves mental clarity, self-confidence and self-image. The spiritual nature of aikido allows one to learn to be an open-hearted and compassionate person.

About Aikido

Aikido is a non-violent and non-competitive Japanese martial art, which emphasizes neutralizing and controlling the force of an attack. Aikido means “the way of harmony with life energy" (ki). Aikido was developed by Morehei Ueshiba, commonly called O’Sensei (great teacher). O’Sensei was a Japanese soldier, farmer, philosopher and one of the greatest martial arts masters in history. He studied and became master of jujutsu, judo, swordsmanship, spear, bayonet, and military combat techniques prior to developing Aikido.

Aikido differs in training and purpose from other martial arts. The training is a physical process with a spiritual result. O’Sensei realized that simply accumulating strength and technique for fighting is ultimately futile. He saw the true purpose of the martial way of life to be the refinement of the individual. O’Sensei created Aikido as a martial way for students to develop a strong body and a calm mind. The natural reaction becomes defense rather than offense, protection rather than destruction.

Aikido practice is strenuous, but not violent; demanding but not rough. It is manifested through smooth spiral movements with no sense of conflict between partners, with no winners or losers. There is no competition in Aikido, no matches, no sparring.
